OPPORTUNITIES FOR UK TEACHERS AND SCHOOLS

The 'Badia' is the desert region inhabited by the Bedouin, while the Project, which is UK based, is linked to the work of the Badia Research and Development Centre (BRDC) in Jordan. The BRDC evolved from a joint project between Jordan's Higher Council of Science and Technology and the Royal Geographical Society in London. In a nutshell the BRDC is working to provide for the sustainability of the communities within the Badia region, which extends over most of the eastern desert of Jordan. The UK-based Jordan Badia Project, sponsored by the British Council, is contributing to this in several ways:

Field Study Material:
A lack of information is often a deterrent to getting an overseas field studies expedition off the ground. By writing field study materials we hope to encourage participating schools to become involved in one of the following:

Teacher CPD:
The Field Study Units are principally aimed at Geographers but there is a wealth of opportunity for other subject areas and cross-curricular activities. Teachers are invited to apply for places to help to develop these units and links. Once in the field you will work alongside Jordanian teachers.

Field Studies Visits:
A field study visit to Jordan will provide a wealth of experience for the participants whether for their chosen subject or their social development. This is also a very worthwhile applied project that will look good on a university CV!

Virtual Field Studies:
For schools unable to make the journey to Jordan we have included material intended for virtual field studies in the classroom.

School Exchanges:
In an ideal world the UK schools will be able to welcome their Jordanian counterparts in a return visit - perhaps through home stays and a local programme of visits and studies.

Cyber Links:
Schools unable to make the journey to Jordan may wish to link with Jordanian schools through the web. Many Jordanian schools are keen to do this.
